Roundup: UC women ousted in NCAA Division II tennis regional

The University of Charleston women's tennis team fell to Mercyhurst 5-0 in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional tournament Tuesday in Erie, Pennsylvania.

The Lakers (19-2) swept doubles play, outpointing Charleston 24-8, before closing the match with a pair of singles wins.

Mercyhurst's No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams recorded 8-2 victories. Annie Baich and Saioa Gomez de Segura defeated UC's Jackie Bakos and Silvana Slusarciuc at No. 2 doubles and Adina Spahalic and Carmen Mantecon Duro bested the Golden Eagles' Alize Uyttenhove and Bridget Dillon.

Adrianna Jeffress and Kayla Frost added a win at No. 1 doubles for the Lakers, taking an 8-4 victory against UC's Kristine Gegeshidze and Elise Edwards.

Singles wins by Baich and Gomez de Segura finished the match for Mercyhurst. Baich defeated Bakos 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles while Gomez de Segura won by retirement over Gegeshidze.

The Lakers advance to the round of 16 and compete next at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

SENIOR GOLF: Barboursville's Steve Fox made four birdies on his way to a 1-under-par 70 to win the Senior Division as the West Virginia Golf Association's Senior Series continued Tuesday at Edgewood Country Club in Sissonville.

Fox edged Charleston's Scott Bodden by four shots to earn the win, while George Hemelt of Morgantown shot a 76 to take the Silver Division. Chapmanville's Eddie Griffith Jr. shot a 72 to won the Gold Division.

Griffith also had the lowest net round of the day with a 62, narrowly beating South Charleston's Don Ryan, who played in the same division and fired a net 63.

The Senior Series continues Monday and Tuesday, with stops at Bridgeport Country Club and Bel Meadow Golf Club, respectively.
