Bracket set for MEC softball tournament

The 2017 Mountain East Conference softball tournament begins on May 5 at the James I. Moyer Complex in Salem, Va.

Eight teams from the league (four from the North Division and four from the South Division) advance to compete at the tournament, including defending champion West Virginia Wesleyan. The MEC Tournament field features five teams in the NCAA Atlantic Region rankings.

Wesleyan, ranked No. 8 in the country, is the South Division champion and the No. 1 seed from that division with a record of 26-4 in conference play. UVa-Wise (22-8) is the No. 2 seed in the South, followed by Charleston (22-10) and Concord (17-13).

Shepherd is the North Division champion for the second-straight year and is that division's No. 1 seed after going 21-11. Wheeling Jesuit (17-15) is No. 2 in the North Division, Notre Dame is No. 3 (13-19) and Urbana is No. 4 (12-20).

COLLEGE TENNIS: The West Virginia State and Charleston women's tennis teams won their opening-round matchups in NCAA Division II regional play on Monday.

State knocked off Edinboro 5-2 in Indiana, Pa. and UC beat West Chester 5-0 in Erie, Pa.

The Yellow Jackets face top-seeded IUP on Tuesday in the. Mercyhurst is next up for UC.

WVU ROWING: After winning two races over the weekend in Philadelphia, team members Gabrielle Boylan, Gillian Downs, Hannah Hammon, Abbigail Rees and Sarah Williams were named WVU Student-Athletes of the Week Monday.

In the first race, the Mountaineers beat both Delaware teams, finishing in 7:57.50. In the second race, they beat Temple by 14 seconds, finishing at 8:11.46.

WVU returns to the water at the Big 12 Championship on May 13-14 at Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

MARSHALL SOCCER CAMPS: The Marshall men's soccer team will sponsor five boys soccer camps in June and July at the Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex in Huntington.

The Herd will hold day camps for ages four to 15 on June 12-15 and July 17-20, an Elite ID Camp for high school boys June 17, a High School Elite Team Camp July 21-23 and a Goalkeeper-Striker Camp July 29-30.
