Mountain East Conference basketball roundup: West Virginia State women use 3-point barrage to down No. 18 Wheeling Jesuit

The West Virginia State women's basketball team nailed 15 of 30 3-point attempts and stunned No. 18 Wheeling Jesuit 90-70 Thursday in Institute.

Sydney Bates and Jasmine Davis did a large portion of the perimeter damage, hitting a combined 9 of 13 3-point attempts and scoring 25 and 14 points, respectively.

Aurreshae Hines added 16 points with Tatyana Reynolds chipping in 11 for the Yellow Jackets (6-6 overall, 3-3 Mountain East Conference).

State forced 21 Jesuit turnovers, helping to negate a 50-31 rebounding deficit.

The Cardinals (10-2, 4-2) were led by Jaana Motton, who scored 22 points and pulled down a game-best 15 rebounds. Chenelle Moore (12), Chelsea Richardson (11) and Mariah Callen (10) also reached double-figure scoring for Jesuit.

State used a 35-13 advantage in the fourth quarter to erase a two-point deficit entering the final period.

West Liberty 71, Charleston 49: The Hilltoppers limited Charleston to just 28.8 percent shooting (15 of 52) as the host team rolled to an MEC win.

Brandi Beader led four double-digit scorers with 17 points for West Liberty (3-9, 2-4), followed by Emily Bucon with 16, Marissa Brown with 14 and McKenna Shives with 10. Johnie Olkosky also filled out the stat sheet with nine points, 13 rebounds, seven assists and two steals.

Jordyn Peck had 10 points to lead the Golden Eagles (4-8, 3-3).

Men

West Liberty 94, Charleston 62: No. 4 West Liberty cashed in 21 times at the foul line, held a 44-32 rebounding advantage and limited visiting Charleston to 38.2 percent shooting as the Hilltoppers (11-1, 5-1) rolled to a win.

David Dennis led a balanced scoing effort with 14 points for West Liberty. Dan Monteroso (13 points), Zac Grossenbacher (12), James Griffin (11) and Clay Guillozet (10) each made significant scoring contributiouns as well. Grossenbacher added a game-high 12 rebounds.

Justin Coleman led UC (9-3, 3-3) with 16 points with Elliott Cole chipping in 14 and Keir Anderson 11.

The Hilltoppers led 48-24 at halftime.
