Glenville State college announced Wednesday that Eric Smith, the football team's offensive coordinator since 2011, has been promoted to head coach. Smith replaces David Hutchison, who stepped down after the 2016 season.

The Pioneers have averaged more than 400 yards per game since 2014. In 2015, Glenville was first in the Mountain East conference in total offense (471.6 yards per game) and second in scoring (37.5 points per game). In 2016, the Pioneers were fourth in the conference in total offense (406.6 ypg) and sixth in scoring (25.9 ppg). Smith's coaching stops include guiding the University of Charleston's quarterbacks in 2004, a graduate assistant position at West Virginia University in 2007 and quality control and grad assistant jobs at the University of Michigan from 2008-10.

A graduate of West Virginia Tech (now WVU Tech), Smith is the career passing leader for the now-defunct Golden Bears football team and a former West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first-team selection.
