Roundup: UC wins Mountain East Conference's Commissioner's Cup

The University of Charleston was named Thursday as the winner of the Mountain East Conference's Commissioner's Cup, awarded annually to the top athletic program in the MEC.

UC also won the inaugural cup in 2013-14. MEC commissioner Reid Amos will present the award to UC at 10 a.m. July 13 in the school's Appalachian Room.

The Golden Eagles won MEC titles in soccer and men's tennis, won a division title in softball and finished in the top third in the conference standings in seven other sports. The standings are compiled using an all-sports rating formula. Wheeling Jesuit finished second in the standings, with Shepherd third. West Virginia State finished 11th.

JUNIOR GOLF: Beckley's Isaiah Zaccheo made par on the par-5 18th hole to edge Wheeling's Jacob Nickell and Hedgesville's Owen Elliott in a sudden-death playoff and win the West Virginia Junior Amateur Championship Thursday at Lakeview Resort in Morgantown.

Zaccheo stormed back from eight shots down, firing a final-round 69 to finish with a two-day total of 144 and force the playoff. Elliott defeated Nickell on the second playoff hole to earn runner-up honors.

Ryan Bilby of Follansbee was the boys 13-14 champion, shooting a 162, while Charleston's Argyle Downs (181) was the 10-12 winner.

On the girls side, defending champion Adeena Shears of Elizabeth ran away with the title for the second year in a row, winning by 12 strokes. It marks the final junior event for Shears, who has committed to play golf at Ohio State University in the fall. Mount Hope's Mary Denny won the girls 10-14 age group with a 199.

UC SPORTS CAMPS: The University of Charleston soccer, volleyball and softball teams will hold summer camps through the month of July and into August.

The softball team will hold an all-skills camp July 11-13 for children ages 8-14 and an elite camp for high school players on July 20. The soccer teams will hold a day camp July 18-22 for children ages 4-17, a women's ID camp July 15-16 for high school girls, and a men's team camp July 22-24 for high school boys. The volleyball team will hold an all-ages setting camp July 6-8, an all-ages hitting camp July 11-13, an all-ages passing camp July 13-15, a camp for students in grades 1-5 July 25-28, a middle school camp July 25-29 and a high school camp Aug. 1-5.

CHAOS SOCCER CAMP: The West Virginia Chaos Summer Soccer Camp will take place July 5-8 at the Elk River Soccer Fields in Charleston.

Each daily session lasts from 9 a.m. until noon. Cost is $100 per player with registration starting at 8:30 a.m. at the field.
