Roundup: WVSU softball sweeps Urbana

West Virginia State swept a doubleheader against Urbana, winning 5-1 in the first game and 5-2 in the second on Monday in Institute.

In the first game, State (24-18, 9-11 Mountain East Conference) broke open a one run game by scoring three runs in the fifth inning. Shandell Curtis was 3 for 3 with two RBIs, former Sissonville standout Dee Dee Loftis had two hits and two RBIs while Sydney Kaplan collected two hits.

The Yellow Jackets scored four runs in the third inning to take control in the second game. Kaplan, Summer Sword, and former Winfield standout Ally Funk had two hits each to lead the way. Calli Norton and Chelsey Parkins pitched complete games, earning wins over Urbana (3-26, 2-17).

UC BASEBALL

West Virginia Wesleyan pounded out 16 hits en route to a 10-5 win against the University of Charleston on Monday at Appalchian Power Park.

Wesleyan (15-14, 7-8 MEC) scored in six of the seven innings, including two runs in the third, fourth, and three more in the sixth. UC (9-22, 4-11 MEC) could only muster four hits with two coming from Anthony Brunetti. Zach Gunter and Austin Hathaway had RBIs for the Golden Eagles.

WV STATE BASEBALL

West Virginia State split a doubleheader at home to Concord, losing the first game 10-1 before bouncing back for a 11-6 win in the second game.

Trenton Porter had a huge day for the Yellow Jackets in the second game, delivering four hits and four RBIs. Phillip Mandt also drove in four runs for State (15-9, 10-4 MEC) over Concord (14-16, 8-6 MEC).

WVU TECH BASEBALL

The Golden Bears swept a four-game series against Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Asbury University after taking two games Monday at Epling Stadium in East Bank. Tech (24-12, 14-6 KIAC) won the first game 8-0 and took the second 4-1.

Former South Charleston High standout pitcher Josh Hudson picked up the shutout win in Monday’s first game, striking out seven and walking two in the seven-inning contest. He also drove in four runs in a 2-for-4 day at the plate. Sebastian Gomez Herrera hit his first home run of the season for Tech.

In the second game, Kyle Sager earned the win with five innings of work, striking out two and allowing one earned run on five hits. Riverside High product Doug Prather went 2 for 3 for the Golden Bears with a double, an RBI and a stolen base.

UC SOFTBALL

The University of Charleston swept a doubleheader against Notre Dame, extending its winning streak to 10 games.

In the first game, UC (30-7, 19-3 MEC) won 8-0 in six innings. Bethany Williams and Laura Ashlock had two RBIs each with Alli Burdette pitching the shutout.

The Golden Eagles won 9-0 in the second game in five innings with Allison Evans delivering a bases-clearing triple to help spearhead the offense. Jessie Rowe pitched the shutout and extended UC’s streak of 31 consecutive innings without allowing a run when Rowe or Burdette is pitching.
