The University of Charleston baseball team pounded out 23 hits Monday as it swept Urbana in a doubleheader at Triana Field in Charleston. The Golden Eagles outlasted the Blue Knights 4-3 in the first game, before holding on for an 11-10 win in the nightcap.
In the first game, UC trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but Anthony Brunetti singled in Justin Mixon and Zach Gunter knocked in Jeff Somuk to give the Golden Eagles a walk-off win.
Brunetti allowed three runs, one earned, on six hits in a complete-game effort to get the victory.
Somuk, Gunter and Brice Arrington each went 2 for 4 and Taylor Itnyre went 2 for 2 for UC.
In the second game, UC jumped out to a 11-4 lead after five. The Blue Knights rallied to score four runs in the seventh and a run each in the eighth and ninth, but failed to finish the comeback.
UC starter Andy Hoyer allowed four runs on 11 hits and struck out two in six innings to get the win, while reliever Tyler Shreve struck out two in the final inning to get the save.
Itnyre went 2 for 5 with three RBIs, while Gunter, Logan Valentine and Steven Davis each knocked in two runs for the Golden Eagles (6-11, 2-2 MEC).
UC travels to Fairmont State Friday for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
