Area roundup: Fairmont nips West Liberty in final seconds

Austin White scored on a 3-yard touchdown run with 36 seconds left to give Fairmont State a 36-30 home victory over West Liberty in Mountain East Conference football Thursday night.

Trailing 30-28, the Falcons drove 83 yards on 10 plays in just 1:48 for the winning touchdown run by White and converted a 2-point conversion pass.

Fairmont’s Emanuel Ivy intercepted a Brent Colabella pass with 12 seconds left to preserve the win.

White finished with 98 yards on 16 carries for Fairmont State (2-2, 2-2). For West Liberty (1-3, 1-2), Jeremiah Ortiz rushed for 217 yards on 28 carries.

WVU TECH SOCCER

The WVU Tech women’s team picked up its first conference win, defeating Midway 6-0. Alyssa Capon scored three goals to lead the Golden Bears (4-1 overall, 1-1 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference).

n WVU Tech’s men’s team (3-0) won its third straight game, defeating Bryant and Stratton-Syracuse 2-1 in Syracuse, New York. Tech got goals from juniors Matias Gandulfo and Daniel Ramirez.

MARSHALL SOFTBALL

Marshall’s Lil’ Sis program is now available for the 16th year. The program is open to girls in grades 1-8 and runs from September to May for a $20 membership fee. The fee includes a T-shirt, free admission to all contests, a team schedule poster, a minimum of two letters a month from a big sister and participation in select pregame locker room activities.
