West Virginia State University football coach Jon Anderson announced the Yellow Jackets' schedule for the upcoming season, opening Saturday, Sept. 3 against Fairmont State in Institute.
State's schedule features six home games and a Thursday night contest against the University of Charleston on Sept. 22. The Yellow Jackets will take on Virginia-Wise Saturday, Oct. 1 in their Homecoming game. For full schedule, see page 2B.

MARSHALL SOFTBALL: Marshall freshman infielder Briana Daiss was named the Conference USA softball co-player of the week, the league announced Monday.
Daiss cranked a two-run home run with one out in the bottom of the eighth to give the Herd a 4-2 walk-off victory over Alabama State, before blasting another two-run shot to lift Marshall over Troy 7-5 in eight innings.
Daiss finished the double-header going 4 for 5 at the plate with two home runs and seven RBIs, and three runs scored.

PREP HOOPS: The latest Associated Press West Virginia high school boys basketball poll was released Monday with Huntington, Poca and Wheeling Central all sitting atop their respective classes.
The Highlanders (17-0) received eight first-place votes and 89 poll points to take the top spot in Class AAA, with Morgantown (17-0) picking up the remaining first-place vote to sit in second. Woodrow Wilson, Martinsburg and Capital round out the top five. Parkersburg South jumps up to No. 9 after being previously unranked and Ripley and Riverside are tied at No. 10.
In Class AA, Poca, Bridgeport, Fairmont Senior, Wyoming East and Robert C. Byrd make up the top five for the second week in a row, while Webster County falls two spots to No. 8 and River View checks in at No. 10 after being unranked last week.
In Class A, Wheeling Central (18-1) earned seven first-place votes to take the No. 1 ranking, followed by Magnolia (14-2), who grabbed the two remaining first-places votes. Tucker County falls two spots to No. 8 and previously unranked Trinity is now No. 10.
On the girls side, Huntington overtakes previous No. 1 Morgantown to sit atop the Class AAA poll. The Highlanders (17-0) earned seven first-place votes and 79 poll points, while the Mohigans (18-1) dropped to No. 2. South Charleston, Parkersburg South and Greenbrier East round out the top five, while St. Albans checks in at No. 10.
In Class AA, Wyoming East falls two spots to No. 3 and Lincoln earned six first-place votes to become the new No. 1. Summers County is second, while Sissonville is fourth and North Marion is No. 5.
In Class A, St. Joseph Central (16-3) remains the top-ranked team with seven first-place votes, followed by Gilmer County, Williamstown, Tucker County and St. Marys.
