Roundup: Poor shooting dooms UC at Glenville State

The University of Charleston couldn't overcome a miserably poor shooting first half in a 72-62 men's basketball loss to Glenville State Saturday at the Waco Center in Glenville.

The Golden Eagles shot just 19 percent in the first half, totaling 16 points. UC (14-10 overall, 11-7 Mountain East Conference) cut a 24-point second-half deficit down to just four on two separate occasions but couldn't come all the way back.

Former George Washington standout Tino diTrapano led the Golden Eagles with 23 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the floor and 5 of 6 from 3-point range.

Also for UC, Aleksander Kesic added 14 points and Jevonte Hughes grabbed 13 rebounds.

Sedric Nady scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Pioneers (10-14, 7-11) and Jalon Plummer had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

STATE WOMEN WIN: Rachel Ward scored a team-high 23 points off the bench to propel West Virginia State over West Virginia Wesleyan 77-72 on Saturday afternoon at the Walker Convocation Center in Institute.

With the game tied at 64 with 3:40 left in the game, Ward hit a pair of 3-pointers in 50 seconds to give West Virginia State the lead for good.

Ward was one of just two players to come off the bench for the Yellow Jackets (12-12, 9-9 MEC) against the Bobcats (6-16, 4-14) and made 7 of 12 3-pointers. WVSU made just eight as a team. Shealyn Shafer added 22 points for the Yellow Jackets and had a team-high 16 rebounds.

Mari Stewart led Wesleyan with 23 points and 16 rebounds, while Adrian Cunningham added 19 points.

UC WOMEN LOSE: The Golden Eagles only trailed by two points after the third quarter but Glenville State pulled away in the fourth for a 72-61 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Waco Center in Glenville.

Chyress Lockhart and former Hurricane standout Abby Watson led the way with 12 points apiece for UC (8-16, 6-12 MEC). The Golden Eagles led 47-42 with 4:11 left in the third quarter but a 7-0 run by the Pioneers to end the period proved the difference.

For Glenville State (17-7, 13-5), Julie Bishop scored a game-high 15 points, including four consecutive 3-pointers in the third quarter. Courtney Davis added 13 points for the Pioneers.

TECH WOMEN WIN: WVU Tech trailed by two points after the first quarter but rolled from there, earning a 67-43 road victory over Midway Saturday in Midway, Kentucky.

Courtney Fisher led the way for the Golden Bears with 13 points and Lakisha Adkins added 10 for Tech (10-16, 5-10 in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference).

Midway remains winless on the season at 0-27 overall and 0-15 in league play.

WVU WOMEN LOSE: Kaylee Jensen scored 18 points and No. 20 Oklahoma State used its defense to set the tone early for a 63-51 win over No. 24 West Virginia Saturday night in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Jensen had 12 in the first half when the Cowgirls held the Mountaineers, who average 71.2 points a game, to 14 points and opened an 18-point lead.

Mandy Coleman had 11 points, Sydney Walton 10 and Brittney Martin had 17 rebounds to go with her eight points for Oklahoma State (19-5, 9-4 Big 12), which beat its fourth ranked team this season.

Tynice Martin had 13 points for the Mountaineers (19-7, 8-5).

Marshall Track and Field: The Herd finished third behind Appalachian State and Wake Forest to close out the Chipotle Marshall Invitational Saturday at the Chris Cline Athletic Center.

MU senior Asia Bange won the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.63 seconds, which established a school and meet record. Senior Shanice Johnson finished fifth in the 200-meter run in a time of 25.05. Herd freshman Elisabeth Paulina took the 400-meter title with meet and school records of 55.34 seconds, and the Herd's 1,600-meter relay team took first place in a time of 3:50.95. Team members were Breanna Hargrove, Paulina, Naja Greer and Shanice Johnson.

YOUTH GOLF: U.S. Kids Golf has formed a local tour in West Virginia that will consist of a spring and fall schedule.

The spring tour begins on April 3 at Stonewall Resort and is open for registration. The spring schedule also includes stops at Shawnee Golf Course, Riviera Country Club, Edgewood Country Clug, Big Bend Golf Course, Sugarwood Golf Club and The Greenbrier.

WV STATE SOFTBALL WINS: The Yellow Jackets swept a doubleheader against Johnson C. Smith Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina, winning 8-5 and 8-1. In the first game, Summer Sword went 3 for 4 and Kayleigh Thompson drove in a pair of runs in the third inning for State. In game two, Sydney Kaplan hit a home run, Ally Funk drove in two runs and Brooke Hale collected three hits for the Yellow Jackets (3-1).
