The West Virginia State men's basketball team digs itself out of the snow today to visit Concord for a 7:30 p.m. game. The contest was postponed from Saturday and rescheduled to today after winter storms brought most of the state to a halt over the weekend.
The Yellow Jackets (5-11, 3-8 Mountain East) are hoping they can thaw out from their on-court deep freeze. After a 70-68 home loss against Kanawha Valley rival Charleston, State has lost seven of its last eight games.
The Mountain Lions (12-5, 7-4 MEC) have won their last two games, including a major upset on its home court, beating No. 1 West Liberty, 108-93, on Jan. 18. Concord is one of the top scoring teams in the offense-happy MEC, ranking third in points (90.6 per game) and shooting percentage (48.7) and second from 3-point range (41.4 percent).
That's not good new for the Yellow Jackets, ranked 11th in the 12-team league in allowing 90.5 points per game. Concord is led by senior guard Rob Reed, ranked third in the MEC averaging 22 points per game. Teammate Aaron Miller, a junior guard, is ninth in the league at 18.4 points per game.
State has a top scorer of its own, senior Markee Mazyck, who is fourth in the league at 21.8 points per game. But the Yellow Jackets are looking for a complementary scorer. The top candidate is freshman Frank Webb, averaging 12 points per game, who has scored in double digits in eight of his last nine games.
