Laura Szorenyi scored 21 points and Shealyn Shafer had 19 points with 12 rebounds Sunday as West Virginia State’s women scored a 79-61 win over Shepherd at the Walker Convocation Center.
Trina Current added 11 and Aurreshae Hines 10, and Deyahnna Styles had nine points and eight rebounds for the Yellow Jackets (6-7, 3-4 Mountain East). Morgan Ardan scored 18 points, Kristen Nunn 14 and Liz Myers 13 with 12 rebounds for the Rams (4-9, 3-4).
Shepherd took a 6-0 lead, but State wiped that out with 12 straight points. The Jackets led 41-27 at the half and kept a similar lead throughout the second half. The final score was the largest margin.
The Yellow Jackets remain at home, taking on Fairmont State at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Fairmont State 61, Charleston 50: Charleston lost its second straight game and eighth out of its last nine against the Falcons. UC (4-9, 2-5 MEC) played the game without leading scorer Chyress Lockhart, who sat out the contest with a knee injury. UC coach Adam Collins said Lockhart, the MEC’s third-leading scorer at 19.3 points per game, aggravated the previous injury in the surgically repaired knee that caused her to miss all of last season. She’ll undergo an MRI this week, but will miss at least Tuesday’s game against Shepherd.
“We don’t know how extensive,” Collins said. “I don’t think it’s full-blown gone. It’ll take a little bit of rest and some strength. I’m hoping it’s just a little bit of wear and tear from nine consecutive days of practice and game, game, game.”
The Golden Eagles could have used Lockhart, a 41.1-percent 3-point shooter, around the arc Sunday. Charleston made just 3 of 14 (21.4 percent) from 3-point range. Kiara Johnson led Charleston with 13 points, while Marissa Koob added 10. Makenzie White scored 18 points and pulled down 8 rebounds, both game highs.
