Despite playing without their top scorer, the West Virginia State men's basketball team was still able to earn a 99-92 road victory over Urbana University in Mountain East Conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon.
Markee Mazyck, who averages 22.3 points per game, did not play, but the Yellow Jackets (4-4 overall, 2-2 in the MEC) still almost hit the century mark in points and got plenty of scoring in other areas, led by Robert Fomby with 29 points and nine rebounds.
Also for State, Frank Webb tallied 24 points, Keith Harris and Tyrie Elliott added 12 points each, and Brent Bauer contribued 10 points. Jahmere Howze scored a career-high 38 points to lead Urbana (1-7, 0-4).

UC MEN WIN: The University of Charleston was led by its defense in earning a 73-66 road victory over Notre Dame College.
The Golden Eagles (4-4, 3-1 MEC), held the Falcons to just 35-percent shooting and 29 points under their season average.
Alec Kesic led a balanced UC attack with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Also for the Golden Eagles, Cameron Dozier and Tino diTrapano, a former George Washington standout, scored 11 points each and Justin Coleman had 10 points. Tyree Gaiter led Notre Dame (5-3, 1-3) with 26 points and Will Vorhees added 23.

TECH WOMEN WIN: Elizabeth Evans hits a jumper in the paint at the buzzer to give the West Virginia University Tech's women's basketball team a 61-59 home victory over the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) on Saturday afternoon at the Baisi Athletic Complex.
Evans scored 15 points for Tech (3-4). Courtney Fisher led the Golden Bears with 17 points, Alexandra Combs added 12 and former Nitro standout Savannah Shamblin contributed 11 points. Cheyenne Madden led Cumberlands (6-2) with a game-high 20 points.

UC WOMEN LOSE: The University of Charleston fell on the road at Notre Dame College 82-61.
Chyress Lockhart led UC (3-4, 1-3 in the MEC) but was the only Golden Eagle player in double figures. Notre Dame (2-6, 1-3) had four double-digit scorers, led by the reigning Conference Player of the Year Martha Nagbe with 17 points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

STATE WOMEN LOSE: Jazmyn Haley scored a three-point play with six seconds left to help lead Urbana to a 77-76 home victory over West Virginia State.
Trailing by two, Haley put back a missed shot, was fouled and hit the free throw to give the Blue Knights (3-2, 2-2 MEC) the victory. Megan Beachy led Urbana with a career-high 25 points. State (3-5, 2-2) blew a nine-point lead with 2:29 left in the game and never scored again.

MARSHALL WOMEN WIN: Marshall remained unbeaten on the season with an 81-45 victory over Alabama A&M at home Saturday afternoon.
The Herd is off to its best start since the 1971-1972 season. Kiana Evans led Marshall (6-0) with 16 points and eight rebounds while former Logan standout Shayna Gore added 14 points and seven boards. Alabama A&M is winless at 0-6.
