West Virginia State University will induct 10 new members to its Sports Hall of Fame through its National Booster Club, the "W" Club, on Saturday, Sept. 30.
The inductees are Bob Ashley (class of 1988) for football, Alleatha Lynetta Bell (class of 1986) for basketball and track, Steven Barry Crosier (class of 1984) for baseball and basketball, Varian Cunningham for football and basketball, Raymond J. Davidson (class of 1975) for football, Samuel A. Hrko (class of 1995) for football, Curtis T. Townes (class of 1985) for basketball, and John "Val" Valentine (class of 1975) for football and track.
Joining them will be honorary inductees Dr. Edward E. Dickerson IV and Dr. Sami Mitri Ghareeb.
Ashley was a three-year letterman for the Yellow Jacket footbal team from 1985-1987. He was a 1987 captain and a three-time all-conference player with 1985 and 1987 honors coming on defense, and his 1986 honors coming on offense.
Bell lettered all four years in basketball and track. She was a member of three WVIAC track team championships from 1981-1983. She holds the school record for the javelin throw and qualified for the 1983 NAIA nationals in javelin and high jump.
Crosier was a two-sport athlete in basketball and baseball and a two-time all-WVIAC baseball player in 1983 and 1984 and an honorable mention All-American.
Cunningham was a two-sport athlete in football and basketball. He was named the freshman of the year in football, with all-conference honors coming in his senior year in football.
Davidson was a four-year Yellow Jackets football starter. He was named to the 1975 all-WVIAC team.
Hrko was a four-year Yellow Jacket football player and a captain his junior and season years. He was a three-time all-WVIAC player (1991-93) and an NAIA honorable mention All-American in 1991 and 1993.
Townes was a two-year starter in basketball and a captain his junior and senior year. He was named to the all-WVIAC team his senior year and recorded over 1,000 points in his career.
Valentine was a lettermen in both football and track and field. He is a former assistant track and field coach.
Dickerson portrayed the Yellow Jacket mascot during his time as a student. In 2016 the WVSU football stadium was named Dickerson Stadium in honor of his family's generosity.
Ghareeb came to WVSU in 1965 from Lebanon. He was president of the WVSU International Club from 1966-1969. The ticket booth in the Walker Convocation Center is named in honor of the Ghareeb Dental Group, and large dental practice that he operates.
