Roundup: Charleston ousted in Division II softball regional

West Virginia Wesleyan's Morgan Bruce launched two home runs and drove in five runs as the host Bobcats pounded the University of Charleston 9-0 in a five-inning mercy-rule decision to claim the Division II Atlantic regional softball tournament title Saturday in Buckhannon.

UC needed two wins over the Bobcats to stay alive in the tournament but didn't come close to a first one as Wesleyan (47-7) pounded out 11 hits and starter Hannah Vet improved to 25-3 with the shutout.

Olivia Gore had a pair of hits with a home run and three RBIs for Wesleyan.

The Bobcats await an opponent and a destination in a Super Regional. Those pairings will be announced on Monday.

UC (36-22) started the day with a 10-2 win over Kutztown to advance to the regional championship. Haleigh Christopher went 2 for 2 with a double, home run and five RBIs for the Golden Eagles with Karli Pinkerton adding a pair of hits and runs as well.

WVU BASEBALL: The Mountaineers pounded out 15 hits and scored in every inning but one in winning 15-5 over Gardner Webb in Morgantown.

Kyle Davis was 3 for 3 for WVU (30-20) with five RBIs, Darius Hill had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in two runs, and Ivan Gonzalez also collected three hits.

Jimmy Galusky added three RBIs for the Mountaineers and Andrew Zitel hit a home run, driving in two runs.

WVU and Gardner Webb (22-27) play in the series finale Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.

MARSHALL BASEBALL: The Herd gave up nine runs in the third inning in dropping a 19-4 decision on the road at Louisana Tech.

Louisiana Tech took a commanding 10-1 lead with their nine-run explosion in the third inning and improved to 34-16 overall and 15-11 in Conference USA.

Leo Valenti, Cory Garrastazu and Sam Finfer had two hits each for Marshall (25-25, 12-14) and Billy Sager hit a home run.

Louisiana Tech has won the first two games of the series and the Herd will look to avoid the sweep in the finale on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.

AREA GOLF: Quarterfinals and semifinals in the West Virginia Golf Association Junior Match Play championship were held at Parkersburg Country Club on Saturday.

Mason Williams, Noah Mullens, Christian Boyd and Mason Weese emerged from the field of 16 and will do battle in semifinals and finals starting at 7:30 a.m. Sunday/

On the girls side, Torren Kalaskey and Olivia Hart will play for the championship just after the boys semifinals tee off.
