UC baseball sweeps Glenville State

The University of Charleston baseball team swept a doubleheader against Glenville State, winning 4-1 and 7-5 Friday in Charleston.

In the opener, the Golden Eagles (20-14, 8-9 Mountain East Conference) scored two runs in the first inning and two in third. In the first, Gianfranco Morello singled to score Austin Hathaway, and Colby Johnson scored on a groundout. The Golden Eagles added two in the third when Lee Carneal doubled and scored on an error and Steven Davis doubled and scored on a Will Lucas single.

In the second game, Johnson went 1 for 3 with a triple and an RBI and Carneal added two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.

WEST VIRGINIA STATE BASEBALL: The Yellow Jackets split a doubleheader against UVa.-Wise, winning the opener 1-0 and dropping game two 18-12 on Friday in Institute.

In the first game, Trevor Sampson singled to right in the bottom of the seventh to drive in Colton Tilley with the winning run. Colby Gainer pitched a shutout for the Yellow Jackets, giving up three hits and striking out six.

In the second game, UVa.-Wise (14-22, 8-10 MEC) trailed 12-9 going into the ninth inning and scored nine runs. Matt Wright hit a home run for the visitors. For the Yellow Jackets (13-19, 6-12) Travis Patterson went 3 for 5 with three RBIs, Matt Washington hit a three-run homer and Sampson had a single, a double and an RBI.

WVU TECH SOFTBALL: The Golden Bears dropped a doubleheader to Bluefield (Va.) College 8-4 and 3-1 Friday in Smithers.

In game one, Bluefield broke the game open with five runs in the fourth inning. Kaitlyn Pennington delivered the big when she doubled in three runs for the Rams. Genna Trippett drove in two runs for the Golden Bears and Lexi Huck went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

In game two, Bluefield scored the winning run in the fourth when Morgan Sawyers reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Megan Arrington. For the Golden Bears, Skylar Connelly collected two hits, including a double, and an RBI.

MU BASEBALL: David Miranda homered and Esteban Puerta had a pair of hits and RBIs as host Florida Atlantic handled Marshall 7-3 on Friday.

Billy Sager had the only multi-hit effort of the game for the Thundering Herd (17-16 overall, 6-7 Conference USA) going 2 for 4 with an RBI. Austin Langham had three hits for the Owls (23-9-1, 10-3).

MU SOFTBALL: Marshall split a doubleheader at Florida International, winning the first game 2-1 and falling in the second 8-4 on Friday.

Shaelynn Braxton and Elizabeth DeShields each had an RBI for the Thundering Herd (33-6 overall, 15-2 Conference USA) with Morgan Zerkle adding a double in the first game. Taylor McCord drove in a pair of runs and homered in the second game with Zerkle going 2 for 2, Ali Burdette going 3 for 3 and Elicia D'Orazio adding a pair of hits.

ED CARTER TOURNEY: Several of the state's top Class AAA and AA baseball teams will participate in the Ed Carter Memorial tournament set for next weekend (April 21-22) at both Loftis Field in St. Albans and Bryan-McIlwain Field in South Charleston.

On Friday, three games will be staged at each site. At St. Albans, the host Red Dragons meet George Washington at 12:30 p.m., followed by GW and Bridgeport at 3:30 and Bridgeport against St. Albans at 6:30. At SC, the host Black Eagles play Greenbrier East at 12:30 p.m, with Point Pleasant against East at 3:30 and SC versus Point at 6:30.

On Saturday, April 22, the place-winner games are all set for St. Albans - the fifth-place game at 10 a.m., the third-place game at 1 p.m. and the championship at 4.
