Roundup: WVU's Grove near-perfect in Mountaineer baseball win

Starter Michael Grove tossed 7 2/3 perfect innings as the West Virginia University baseball team blanked Kansas 8-0 Saturday at Monongalia County Ballpark in Morgantown. Grove allowed his only hit in the top of the eighth before being relieved in the ninth.

Grove, a former standout at Wheeling Park, struck out 12 to improve to 3-1 on the season.

Kyle Davis went 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, Darius Hill went 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs and Brandon White drove in two runs for the Mountaineers (19-10, 6-2 Big 12), who have won 10 of their last 13 games and six straight.

WVU goes for the series sweep of the Jayhawks Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

MARSHALL BASEBALL: Shane Hanon stroked a RBI double with two outs in the top of the 10th inning to give the Herd a 2-1 win over Alabama-Birmingham Saturday afternoon in Birmingham, Alabama.

Andrew Zban staked Marshall to a 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the top of the third, but UAB knotted the score at 1 in the bottom of the seventh to help force extra innings.

Marshall's Tyler Ratliff recorded a one-out single in the 10th. After a UAB pitching change, the Herd's Sam Fifner struck out before Hanon doubled to right-center field to bring in Ratliff and give Marshall the win.

Wade Martin (3-1) tossed a career-high nine innings, allowing just one run on three hits and striking out seven.

Ratliff, Zban and Billy Sager each collected two hits for Marshall (14-15, 5-6 Conference USA).

MARSHALL SOFTBALL: The Herd used a three-run third inning to put away Florida Atlantic 4-2 Saturday in Huntington. Marshall improved to 30-5 overall and 12-1 in C-USA.

Jordan Dixon (22-4) allowed two runs on four hits and struck out nine in a complete game.

Abigail Estraded went 3 for 3 with two RBIs, Taylor McCord drove in two runs and Morgan Zerkle tripled for the Herd.

WEST VIRGINIA STATE BASEBALL: The Yellow Jackets split a doubleheader with Concord Saturday in Athens. State dropped the first game 14-0 before bouncing back for a 9-8 victory in the nightcap.

In the first game, Concord scored seven runs in the bottom of the third to put State away early. Trevor Wiersma went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs and Jordan Clark went 2 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs for the Mountain Lions, who tallied 15 hits.

Brandon Wright went 2 for 4 to lead State.

In the second game, Jonathan Cline singled in Chris Ruppenthal in the top of the eighth to propel the Yellow Jackets to the win.

State led 8-5 after the top of the seventh, but Concord scored three runs in the bottom of the frame to set Cline's heroics.

Trayvis Patterson, Cline and Matt Washington each drove in two runs for the Yellow Jackets (12-16, 5-9 Mountain East Conference) and Wright went 3 for 5 and scored twice.

Jonathon Murphy got the win for State, striking out four in three perfect innings of relief.

WEST VIRGINIA STATE SOFTBALL: The Jackets split a doubleheader with Glenville State Saturday in Glenville. The Pioneers took the first game 3-0 before WVSU held on for a 4-3 win the nightcap.

In the first game, Glenville's Ally Brown scattered four hits and struck out four in a complete-game effort and Raven Greer went 2 for 3 with home run and an RBI to give the Pioneers the win.

Zoey Carte doubled for the Yellow Jackets.

In the second game, WVSU used a three-run fourth inning to earn the victory.

Callie Huck knocked in two runs and Brooklyn Hale and Micca Mirabella each had two hits and an RBI to lead the Yellow Jackets (20-18, 6-4 MEC).

TECH SOFTBALL: The Golden Bears split a doubleheader with Midway Saturday in Poca. Tech lost the first game 6-1 but edged the Eagles 4-3 in the second.

In the first game, Midway's Tiffany Wickline allowed just one run on four hits and struck out five in seven innings to get the win. Skylar Connelly doubled and Madeline Olson drove in a run for the Golden Bears (11-26, 7-5 River States Conference).

In the second game, Connelly blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to help give Tech the win. Connelly finished 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs, Kayla Harbin went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Kayla Jones doubled for Tech.
