The University of Charleston softball team won two games Thursday in Clermont, Florida. The Golden Eagles shut out Edinboro 9-0 in the first game before putting away Slippery Rock 10-5 in the nightcap.
In the first game, Alli Burdette fanned seven and allowed just three hits in six scoreless innings. Laura Ashlock went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs, Haleigh Christopher smashed a two-run homer and Monica Carter went 2 for 4 with a triple and an RBI to lead the Golden Eagles at the plate.
In the second game, UC starter Jessie Rowe earned the win, giving up five runs (two earned) on seven hits and striking out five in a complete-game effort. Ashlock went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs and Christopher and Monica Carter each drove in two runs for the Golden Eagles (8-7).
UC opens Mountain East Conference play Saturday with a doubleheader at Virginia-Wise. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.

PREP BASEBALL: Nate Dunham went 3 for 4 with two home runs and seven RBIs as host Hurricane opened its season with a 12-2 victory over Huntington. Liam Bailey also homered and Bo Adkins went 2 for 4 with a home run for the Redskins (1-0). Jordan Walker and Braxton Johnson each went 1 for 3 with an RBI to lead the Highlanders.

PREP SOFTBALL: Harley Vanatter struck out nine in four perfect innings as Hurricane won by mercy rule over visiting St. Albans 10-0. Katie Adams went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, Taylor McCray doubled in a run and Jayme Bailey collected three hits for the Redskins (2-0).
George Washington 3, South Charleston 0: Emma Groe went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI as the Patriots won their season opener against host South Charleston. Katy Darnell went 3 for 3 with a triple for George Washington (1-0). Sydney Givens went 2 for 3 to lead the Black Eagles (0-1).
