The West Virginia State softball team extended its winning streak to 11 games Friday, sweeping Shaw in a doubleheader in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Yellow Jackets won 7-2 in the first game before blasting the Bears 14-6 in the nightcap.
In the first game, State starter Chelsey Parkins (3-0) allowed just two runs on seven hits and struck out two in a complete-game effort. Summer Sword led the Yellow Jackets at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs.
In the second game, the Yellow Jackets trailed 4-3 after two innings but exploded for six runs in the top of the third and five more over the fourth and fifth innings. Brittany Allison went 3 for 3 with a home run and five RBIs for the Yellow Jackets (14-8).

MARSHALL BASEBALL: Leo Valenti poked an RBI single to left field in the bottom of the seventh for what proved to be the winning run as Marshall held off Niagara 5-4 Friday in Huntington.
Marshall's Matt Harrison picked up his first collegiate hit with a pinch-hit double to lead off the bottom of the seventh, setting up Valenti's game-winning hit.
Tyler Ratliff drove in two runs and Will Ray went 2 for 4 for the Herd (7-6).

WVU BASEBALL: West Virginia split a doubleheader against Old Dominion Friday in Norfolk, Virginia. The Mountaineers dropped the first game 8-4 but rallied for a 3-1 victory in the nightcap.
In the first game, WVU led 4-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth, but the Monarchs cranked out five runs to get the win. Chase Illig smacked a two-run home run and Marques Inman and Kyle Gray each drove in a run for the Mountaineers.
In the second game, WVU starter Michael Grove struck out 11 in five no-hit innings to earn his first win of the season, and relievers Kade Strowd and Alek Manoah combined to allow just one run on two hits in four innings. Kyle Davis and Ivan Gonzalez knocked in runs for the Mountaineers (8-6).

UC BASEBALL: The University of Charleston swept Salem International in a doubleheader Friday at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston. The Golden Eagles held on for a 5-3 win in the first game before blanking the Tigers 9-0 in the nightcap to earn their eighth straight win.
In the first game, UC jumped out a 2-0 lead after the second inning. Salem responded with two runs in the top of the third, but the Golden Eagles tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good. Steven Davis, Jack Brunetti and Will Lucas each drove in a run for UC, and pitchers Adam Jafine and Robert Fultineer combined for 12 strikeouts and allowed just three runs on nine hits in seven innings.
In the second game, the Golden Eagles scored sevens runs in the bottom of the fifth. Nick Wilson went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and Lee Carneal went 3 for 3 with two RBIs for UC. Jonathan Carr picked up the win, striking out nine and scattering four hits in six shutout innings.

MEC BASKETBALL: The Wheeling Jesuit and Glenville State women's basketball teams were eliminated in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional tournament Friday in California, Pennsylvania. Wheeling Jesuit fell to Virgina Union 66-58, while Glenville lost to California 88-86.
Monica Burns led the sixth-seeded Cardinals (25-7) with 17 points and Mariah Callen chipped in 12.
The eighth-seeded Pioneers (24-6) were led by Kristin DesRocher, who buried six 3-pointers for 25 points.

PREP LACROSSE: The fifth annual Schodown at Schoenbaum High School Lacrosse Showcase is set for Sunday at Schoenbaum Field in Charleston.
There arer seven teams scheduled to compete, with Capital and Bridgeport kicking off the event at 10 a.m.
George Washington, Huntington, St. Albans, Putnam County and the Kanawha Valley Spartans will also be playing.
The cost is $5 and kids 15 and under are free.
