Quarterfinal No. 1: Wheeling Jesuit 78, Shepherd 49
The defending champion Wheeling Jesuit University women's basketball team kept hopes of a repeat alive Thursday afternoon, dispatching of Shepherd in the Mountain East Conference women's quarterfinals at the Civic Center.
Chenelle Moore led the Cardinals (23-6) with 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting, while Monica Burns added 13 points. Jesuit will face the winner between UVa-Wise and West Virginia State at 2:15 p.m. Saturday in the tournament semifinals.
The Rams (15-17) had eyes on an upset early in the game. An 11-2 second-quarter run gave Shepherd a 26-21 lead with 3:43 left in the first half. But the Cardinals rebounded and outscored the Rams 11-0 in that final 3:43 to take a 32-26 lead at the half. Jesuit then finished the third quarter on a 9-0 run and outscored the Rams 27-12 in the game's final 10 minutes to coast into the finish.
Liz Myers led Shepherd with 16 points, while Morgan Arden added 11. The Cardinals held the Rams to 18-of-62 shooting (29 percent) for the game and scored 20 points off 17 Shepherd turnovers.
