Mountain East Conference basketball tournament pairings set

The seedings and pairings for the men's and women's Mountain East Conference basketball tournaments have been finalized, with Fairmont State's men and Glenville State's women each claiming regular-season titles and the No. 1 seeds.

The top 10 teams qualify for the tournament at the Charleston Civic Center, with the top six seeds earning first-round byes. The opening round is scheduled for Wednesday, with the women's quarterfinals slated for Thursday and the men's quarterfinals for Friday.

On the men's side, Fairmont State will head into the tournament as the No. 1 team in the country and the top seed. West Liberty is seeded second, followed by Wheeling Jesuit, Shepherd, Notre Dame and West Virginia Wesleyan.

In the first round, seventh-seeded Glenville State will take on No. 10 seed Virginia-Wise at 6 p.m., followed by eighth-seeded University of Charleston against No. 9 seed Urbana at 8:15.

Friday's quarterfinals will see second-seeded West Liberty play the Glenville-Wise winner at noon, with third-seeded Wheeling taking on No. 6 seed Wesleyan at 2:15. Fairmont will square off against the Charleston-Urbana winner at 6 and fourth-seeded Shepherd plays fifth-seeded Notre Dame at 8:15.

For the women, Glenville State enters as the No. 1 seed while defending champion Wheeling Jesuit is the No. 2 seed, followed by third-seeded Virginia-Wise and fourth-seeded Notre Dame. Fairmont State is the No. 5 seed and West Virginia State is seeded sixth.

The opening round will pit seventh-seeded Shepherd against No. 10 seed West Virginia Wesleyan at noon, followed by eighth-seeded University of Charleston against No. 9 seed West Liberty at 2:15 p.m.

In Thursday's quarterfinals, Wheeling Jesuit will take on the Shepherd-Wesleyan winner at noon, with Virginia-Wise and West Virginia State playing at 2:15. Top-seeded Glenville will play the Charleston-West Liberty winner at 6 and Notre Dame and Fairmont face off at 8:15.
