The University of Charleston softball team is ranked No. 9 in the country in the season's first National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll.
The Golden Eagles will open their season on Feb. 24 against King University in Hartsville, South Carolina. Fellow Mountain East Conference member West Virginia Wesleyan is also ranked nationally at No. 14.

WVU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: The Mountaineers jumped out to a 14-point halftime lead and held on for a 66-59 home victory over No. 24 Kansas State in Big 12 action at the WVU Colisseum.
In improving to 18-8 overall and 6-8 in league play, WVU had good balance with four players in double figures, led by Chania Ray and Katrina Pardee with 14 each.
Lanay Montgomery added a double-double for the Mountaineers with 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Teana Muldrow contributed 10 points. Kindred Wesemann paced Kansas State (18-9, 8-6) with 14 points.

WVU TECH SWIMMING: Golden Bears coach David Dent was named the Appalachian Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. The men's squad won the 2017 AAC Championship and the women were runners-up.

POWER BASEBALL: The West Virginia Power will hold its job fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, in the Macy's Court at Charleston Town Center.
The team is seeking game-day employees for the upcoming season. National anthem auditions will follow the job fair from 2-3 p.m.

MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL: Dunbar forced overtime late and won it in the extra session, knocking off John Adams 44-39 in the championship game of the Kanawha County girls middle school basketball tournament at Sissonville middle school.
Maliha Witten led Dunbar with 16 points. Kalissa Lacy paced John Adams with 16 points. South Charleston defeated Andrew Jackson 25-20 in the consolation game.
