West Virginia State University's baseball team was picked Wednesday to win the Mountain East's South Division. The Yellow Jackets' foe in last season's MEC title game, Shepherd, was picked to win the North. The preseason poll was voted on by the conference's coaches.
State, which won the South last season and finished at 32-15, received nine first-place votes. Concord earned two first place votes and was picked second, while Glenville State received one first-place vote and was picked third. The University of Charleston, which finished last season at 16-34, was picked to finish fourth in the South.
Shepherd received nine first-place votes in the North, while Notre Dame College received the other three and was picked to finish second. If Shepherd and WVSU do meet again for the conference crown, the Yellow Jackets hope it will end differently. The Rams beat the Yellow Jackets twice in the double-elimination tournament, 11-5 in the first game and 19-2 in the second game.
