West Virginia State University will introduce its new head football coach at 3 p.m. Friday at the Walker Convocation Center on WVSU's campus.

The university sent a news release Thursday morning announcing the event, but did not name the new coach. Sources told the Gazette-Mail on Wednesday night that the Yellow Jackets are expected to promote offensive coordinator John Pennington, who had been serving as interim head coach, to the permanent position.

Pennington would replace Jon Anderson, who left Institute after four seasons to become head coach at the University of Sioux Falls. Anderson came to West Virginia State after serving as USF's defensive coordinator.

Pennington served as Anderson's offensive coordinator the past two seasons, and the Yellow Jackets led the Mountain East Conference in passing in 2015 and was second in that category in 2016. State has won eight games in its last two seasons after winning just five games in the five seasons before that.
