MEC football roundup: Charleston slips past West Liberty

The University of Charleston trailed by nine points early in the third quarter, but rallied with 28 second-half points to earn a 42-37 win at West Liberty Saturday at West Family Stadium.

The Golden Eagles survived a last-second pass attempt from Dakota Conwell when Zaire Lewis picked off the pass to seal the win. UC improved to 5-1, while West Liberty dropped to 3-3.

Jeremy Johnson paced UC with 107 rushing yards on 19 carries, while completing 17 of 28 passes for 217 yards and a score. West Liberty was led by Conwell's 399 passing yards and four touchdowns, but also had two picks while connecting on 19 of 32 passes.

Tevion Cappe, Marvin Elman and Jermaine Kelly had rushing touchdowns for UC, while Joey Augustin and Rashawn Dickerson had TD catches.

Concord 63, Virginia-Wise 21: At Athens, Concord scored 26 first-quarter points and led 35-9 at the half in rolling to the easy home win. Concord improved to 4-2, while Wise dropped to 0-6.

Calvinaugh Jones paced Concord's rushing attack with 260 yards and three TDs on 17 attempts, while Brian Novak contributed 221 passing yards and a pair of scores on 15-of-23 passing.

The Mountain Lions' defense limited Wise to minus-9 yards rushing on 35 attempts. Wise's Jeremy Eubank passed for 244 yards and a score.

Shepherd 48, Glenville State 31: At Glenville, the Rams led by just three at the half but pulled away in the second half to earn the road win. Shepherd improved to 5-0, while Glenville dropped to 4-2.

Allen Cross led the Rams with 108 rushing yards on 20 attempts, while Jabre Lolley finished with 74 yards and a score on 16 tries. Jeff Ziemba contributed 292 passing yards and three TDs for the Rams. Lolley also had 156 receiving yards and two scores on three receptions.

Glenville was led by Sean Steele, who hit on 23 of 48 passes for 249 yards and two scores. Quin Thornton and Ernesto Torres had TD receptions. The Pioneers' ground attack was led by Tevin Drake, who had 112 yards and a score on 26 tries.

Urbana 33, Lake Erie College 30: In Painesville, Ohio, Urbana fell behind 9-0 after one quarter but rallied to win a nonconference matchup.

Trailing 23-21 after three quarters, Urbana's Cedrick Presley scored a pair of fourth quarter TDs on runs of 29 and two yards to give the Blue Knights a 33-23 lead with four and a half minutes to play. Lake Erie made it interesting with a John Banyasz 12 yard TD run with :43 seconds left, but couldn't get any closer.

Presley finished with two TDs and 61 total yards for Urbana, while Eric Pelphry added a TD run.
