MEC football: W.Va. State rallies for win at Virginia-Wise

West Virginia State fell behind by 28 points in the first quarter Saturday before mounting a furious comeback that ended in a 52-45 win at University of Virginia-Wise. Wise remained winless at 0-5, while State improved to 3-2.

The Cavaliers scored touchdowns on an interception and a blocked punt on the way to a 28-0 lead. State (3-2 overall, 3-2 Mountain East Conference) rallied with 21 unanswered points but Wise (0-5, 0-5) held a 38-21 advantage at the half and a 38-28 lead entering the fourth quarter.

State scored 24 points in the fourth quarter to pull out the win. Matt Kinnick hit on 21 of 38 passes for 336 yards and three scores to lead State, while Quinton Gray pulled in nine catches for a conference season-high 202 yards and two scores.

Dennis Gardeck paced the Yellow Jackets' defense with 16 tackles and a pair of sacks, with William Merritt adding eight tackles and two interceptions. State was limited to just 22 rushing yards by the Cavaliers' defense.

Glenville State 38, Notre Dame 30: The Pioneers (4-1, 4-1) jumped to a 21-3 halftime lead and then held on for the tough road win. Rahmann Lee led Glenville with 116 yards on 22 carries, including TD runs of 4 and 11 yards. Ralph Gordon grabbed seven passes for 109 yards and two TDs to lead the Glenville air attack. Running back Tevin Drake scored from 4 yards out to make it 38-17 with 7:57 to play, but Notre Dame (1-4, 1-3) responded with a 51-yard scoring run by DJ Greene and a 32-yard TD pass from Malik Grove to Mithcell Shegos in the final six minutes. Grove finished with 283 passing yards and a pair of TDs , while Greene led Falcons with 107 rushing yards.

Fairmont State 6, Urbana 0: The Falcons defense set or tied three school records in a dominating home performance against Urbana (1-4, 1-4). Fairmont (2-2, 2-2) set school records in allowing minus-3 yards of total offense, and minus-27 rushing yards. It tied the school record for zero rushing first downs allowed. Johnny Dearstine provided the days only scoring with a 20-yards field goal in the first quarter and a 28-yarder in the fourth. Terrell Charles led Fairmont with 125 rushing yards, while Austin White added 54.

West Liberty 38, West Virginia Wesleyan 31: Hilltoppers quarterback Dakota Conwell rushed for three scores and passed for another in a tough road win. Conwell finished 19 of 30 for 191 yards while rushing for 177 yards on 14 carries. Jeremiah Ortiz led the Hilltoppers (3-2, 3-2) with 59 rushing yards and a score, while Daree' Goodwin collected a five-yard TD catch. Michael Anderson had a team-high 92 rushing yards for Wesleyan (0-5, 0-5), with De'shaun Burgess adding 86 yards and a TD reception.
