MEC football roundup: Charleston falls at Alderson Broaddus

The University of Charleston fell behind early and could never catch up in falling 34-17 Saturday at Alderson Broaddus.

It was the fifth straight loss for UC, which dropped to 2-8, while A-B won its sixth straight to improve to 8-2.

There were a couple of bright spots for UC, as senior wide receiver Joey Augustin pulled in five catches for 173 yards and two scores to become the school's career leader in receiving yardage. Augustin also owns the school's TD reception record.

Senior linebacker Rhakeem Stallings also surpassed the 100-tackle mark on the season after collecting 14 stops against the Battlers.

UC quarterback Anthony Fontana passed for 283 yards after hitting on 19 of 31 attempts, but the Golden Eagles could manage just 46 rushing yards on 23 carries.

For A-B, Brandon Jones tallied 232 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries, while the Battlers averaged 5.2 yards per attempt on 52 total carries.

Tied at the half, the Rams allowed just seven second half points to claim the home win in a battle for the Mountain East Conference's top spot.

Shepherd moves to 9-0 overall and 9-0 in conference play, while Fairmont is now 9-1 and 8-1.

The Rams defense broke a 10-10 tie early in the third quarter when Jared Austin picked off a Fairmont pass and returned it 17 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.

Shepherd's offense got in on the action seven minutes later when Billy Brown pulled in a 3-yard TD pass from Zeff Ziemba to make it 24-10 late in the third.

Fairmont cut into the lead when Cooper Hibbs connected with Laurence King on a 74-yard TD pass just 15 seconds later, then Shepherd closed out the scoring with a 30-yard Zach Wise field goal.

Ziemba finished with 192 passing yards and two scores, while Deonte Glover piled up 90 rushing yards.

For Fairmont, Hibbs totaled 322 passing yards with a pair of scores, but also had a pair of interceptions and was sacked seven times.

The Bobcats fell behind in the first quarter but rallied with 35 unanswered points in rolling to the road win.

Senior back Michael Anderson led the Wesleyan comeback with 193 rushing yards and three TDs while adding another score on a 4-yard pass from Ryan Deal. Anderson scored on TD runs of 40, 29 and 1 yards.

Deal finished with 165 passing yards and another TD pass to Marcus Smith but also tossed three interceptions.

The Bobcats' defense limited Wise to just 95 passing yards and 133 rushing yards while forcing a pair of turnovers.

Wesleyan improved to 4-6 and 4-5, while Wise slipped to 6-4 and 5-4.

Notre Dame quarterback Malik Grove connected on 21 of 24 passes for 198 yards and three scores while adding another 54 yards and a TD on the ground in the home win.

D.J. Greene paced the Falcons on the ground with 133 yards and a TD, while Mitchell Shegos led all receivers with 10 catches for 108 yards and two scores.

Urbana was limited to just 17 rushing yards on 22 attempts.

The Falcons improved to 8-2 overall and 7-2 in the MEC, while Urbana dropped to 3-7 and 2-7.
