Roundup: Charleston men's soccer team advances to Mountain East Conference tournament finals

The University of Charleston men's soccer team gave up an early first-half goal but responded with the last four goals of the game to earn a 4-1 home victory over West Virginia Wesleyan in the Mountain East Conference tournament semifinals Thursday night at Trace Fork.

Patrick Guier scored the equalizer for the Golden Eagles (15-2-1), Bruno Oliveira gave UC the lead, and Guier scored again in the first half before Will Roberts added a second.half goal.

UC faces Urbana at 3 p.m. Sunday in the MEC tournament title game.

UC WOMEN'S SOCCER: The University of Charleston women's soccer team will travel to South Euclid, Ohio, on Sunday to take on Notre Dame College for the Mountain East Conference tournament title.

UC (14-3-2), the tournament's second seed, reached the finals with a 1-0 overtime win Wednesday over third-seeded West Virginia Wesleyan in the semis. Following a scoreless regulation, Charleston got the win in the 91st minute.

Junior midfielder Ivey Nucilli whipped a low corner kick into the box, which was hit off the crossbar and into the net by sophomore MEC Defender of the Year Marlee Coleman. It was Coleman's first recorded goal of the season.

NEHLEN WINS STAGG AWARD: Former West Virginia University head coach Don Nehlen will receive the American Football Coaches Association's 2017 Amos Alonzo Stagg Award, the AFCA announced Thursday.

The Stagg Award is given annually to those "whose services have been outstanding in the advancement of the best interests in football." It will be presented to Nehlen at the American Football Coaches Awards show on Jan. 10 during the 2017 AFCA Convention in Nashville, Tennessee.

Nehlen began his head coaching career in 1968 at Bowling Green. After three years from 1977-79 as an assistant at Michigan, he became the Mountaineers' head coach. Nehlen posted a career record of 202-128-8 at Bowling Green and West Virginia before retiring in 2000. He took the Mountaineers to 13 bowl games and a pair of undefeated regular seasons in 1988 and 1993, won the Big East Conference and was the 17th coach in Division I-A history to reach 200 victories. His 149 wins at WVU remain the best total in Mountaineer history.

WVU FOOTBALL: West Virginia University center Tyler Orlosky was named one of 10 finalists for the 2016 Senior Celebrating Loytalty and Achievement for Staying in School (CLASS) Award, focusing on the total student-athlete on and off the field.

Orlosky, who has started at center for the past three years, is the first WVU football player to earn the CLASS Award finalist honor and is one of two from the Big 12 (Jordan Evans, Oklahoma).

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as a NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, character, classroom, and competition.

WVU VOLLEYBALL: Hannah Shreve, a former George Washington standout and current West Virginia University volleyball player, was named to the Academic All-District 2 team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Shreve, a middle blocker for the Mountaineers, graduated in May of 2016 with a Bachelor's of Accounting after just three years, and has a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. She is a team captain for the Mountaineers and earlier in the season moved into WVU's all-time top-10 career blocking list and now ranks fifth with 285 career block assists.

WVU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Three West Virginia University women's basketball games will be televised on Root Sports Pittsburgh and another game will air on Nexstar Broadcasting Group through WVU's partnership with IMG.

WVU's first TV appearance is set for Sunday, Dec. 4, with WVU playing host to Ole Miss for the SEC/Big 12 Challenge at the WVU Coliseum, airing on the Nexstar Broadcasting Group.

Two WVU games will air on ROOT SPORTS Pittsburgh, Feb. 15 against Kansas State and Feb. 27 versus Kansas. WVU opens the season against Charleston Southern on Nov. 12. at 4 p.m.

WVU BASEBALL: The West Virginia University 2017 schedule was announced, featuring 23 home games and games against four of the eight teams that made the 2016 College World Series.

The 56-game schedule is highlighted by a pair of games at the 2016 National Champions, Coastal Carolina, and Big 12 home series against TCU and Texas Tech, both coming off World Series appearances.

WVU is coming off a record-setting campaign, where the Mountaineers won 36 games, the most since 2009, and advanced to their first Big 12 tournament championship game. Opening day is set for Friday, Feb. 17, at Charlotte. The home opener is slated for Tuesday, March 14, against Morehead State.
