The University of Charleston women's soccer team begins its postseason at 7 p.m. Wednesday, hosting West Virginia Wesleyan in the Mountain East Conference tournament semifinals at the soccer fields at Trace Fork.
The winner of that game faces the winner between No. 1 seed Notre Dame College and No. 4 seed West Liberty on Sunday at the home field of the highest-seeded remaining team.
The second-seeded Golden Eagles (13-3-2, 13-2-1 MEC) have won three straight since falling 2-1 to Notre Dame in Charleston on Oct. 20. Third-seed Wesleyan (12-2-3, 11-2-3 MEC) are in the exact same boat, winning three straight after a loss to Notre Dame.
UC's team will take the field Wednesday with a few players who have new additions to their trophy cases. The MEC announced its season's-end awards Tuesday, and the Golden Eagles swept all three player trophies. Midfielder Ida Garberg was named the MEC offensive player of the year, while midfielder Marlee Coleman was named the conference's defensive player of the year. Midfielder Cassandra Forster was named the MEC freshman of the year.
The Golden Eagles put five players on the all-conference first team and four more on the second team. Joining Garberg and Coleman on the first team were defenders Alice Broadbent and Dominique Dosky and forward Marieke Kramer. Second-team members were goalkeeper Zoe Zyta, defender Kelci Pettiford-Winters, Forster and forward Ivey Nucilli. Forster also was named to the conference's all-freshman team.
