Mountain East football: West Virginia Wesleyan hands Charleston fourth straight loss

The University of Charleston dropped its fourth straight game in a 27-25 Mountain East Conference loss Saturday at West Virginia Wesleyan.

UC slipped to 2-7 overall and 2-4 in MEC play, while Wesleyan moved to 3-6 and 3-5.

The Bobcats led just 4-2 early in the second quarter after three consecutive safeties opened the scoring.

Wesleyan started the offensive scoring with consecutive touchdowns on a 1-yard run by Michael Anderson and a 71-yard pass from Ryan Deal to Ian Waddell. Deal finished with 198 passing yards while Anderson netted 63 yard on 21 carries.

UC received 128 rushing yards and TD runs of 5 and 1 yards from Marvin Elam. Joey Augustin had three catches for 100 yards and a 41-yard TD catch from Brant Grisel.

Glenville 19, Concord 8: The Pioneers (4-4, 4-3) trailed 8-7 at the break but rallied with 12 unanswered second-half points to notch the road win.

Thomas Boles piled up 153 rushing yard to lead Glenville, while Eric Kyle added 70 yards and an TD. Dionne Jackson started the scoring for the Pioneers with a 96-yard punt return in the first quarter.

Concord (2-6, 2-6) was led by Jermeil Douse with 55 rushing yards, while JaVaughan Burrus added the lone score.

Shepherd 38, West Liberty 27: The Rams (8-0, 8-0) had a battle before finally earning the tough road win. Shepherd led just 31-27 with 7:53 to play after Dan Monteroso pulled in a 4-yard TD pass from Dakota Conwell, but the Rams answered with 1:29 left on a 19-yard TD run by Brandon Hlavach.

Hlavach led Shepherd with 86 rushing yards on 17 carries and Jeff Ziemba triggered Shepherd's passing game, tossing for 303 yards and TD passes of 22 and 4 yards to Billy Brown. Brown finished with eight receptions totaling 108 yards.

For the Hilltoppers (3-6, 3-5), Conwell led the way with 226 passing yards and a pair of scores while adding 55 yards on the ground. Monteroso had both TD receptions for WL.

UVA-Wise 39, Urbana 36: Brycen Lee paced the Wise offense with 387 passing yards and four TDs on 36-of-43 passing, with Jacob Cousins pulling in a pair of TD passes. Carlton Griffith also had two rushing scores for Wise (6-3, 5-3).

Tajuan Green passed for 425 yards and five scores for Urbana (3-6, 2-6), but hit on just 25 of 60 passes. Kelly Carter collected four passes for 158 yards and three scores, with Trevon Saunders adding nine catches for 131 yards and two more touchdowns.
