MEC football roundup: West Virginia Wesleyan, Wise get wins

West Virginia Wesleyan scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns, including a game-winning 1-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Deal to Derek Drapen with just 16 seconds to play to pull out a 21-20 road win at Urbana University in Mountain East Conference football play Saturday.

Drapen also added a third-quarter TD catch (21 yards) from Deal for the Bobcats' only score of the third quarter. Wesleyan (2-5 overall, 2-5 MEC) trailed 13-0 at the half after weathering a pair of first-quarter Urbana scores.

Senior back Michael Anderson led Wesleyan with 187 rushing yards on 38 carries, including a 4-yard scoring run to start the fourth quarter.

Cale Burdyshaw, who threw for 309 passing yards, had a hand in all three Urbana scores, with a pair of TD passes to Trevon Saunders (34 and 10 yards) and a 73-yard TD strike to Kelly Carter. Urbana dropped to 2-5 and 1-5.

The Cavaliers trailed at the half but used a 4-yard touchdown pass from Jeremy Eubank to Jacob Cousins in the fourth quarter to pull out the road win. Carlton Griffith ran for 156 yards and a pair of first quarter TD runs to lead the Cavaliers (5-2, 4-2), while Javonte Latney also had a rushing score. Wise outgained the hosts 500-272 in total yardage. For West Liberty (3-4, 3-3), Dakota Conwell tallied 102 rushing yards while throwing for 137 more and a pair of scores. Conwell connected with Dan Monteroso and Shane Phillips for touchdowns.
