Fairmont State's defense came up with a key interception late in the game to preserve a 21-13 home victory over the University of Charleston Thursday night in Mountain East Conference football.
Trailing by eight and at his own 40-yard line, Golden Eagles quarterback Anthony Fontana was picked off by Fairmont State's Stephen Turner with 1:27 left in the game.
With the victory, the Falcons remained undefeated on the season at 7-0 and 6-0 in league play while UC drops to 2-5 overall and in the MEC.
Fairmont State scored a touchdown in the first quarter on a Terrell Charles 2-yard run and the Falcons added another score in the second quarter on an Andre Hall 11-yard pass from Cooper Hibbs to lead 14-0 at halftime.
UC cut the lead in half by getting on the scoreboard with 2:28 left in the third quarter on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Fontana to Joey Augustin to make the score 14-7, but the Golden Eagles would get no closer.
Charles scored on a 1-yard touchdown run, his second of the game for Fairmont State, with 8:53 remaining to up the Falcons' lead to 21-7 before a 1-yard TD run from UC's Marvin Elam with 6:50 left provided the game's final points.
Fontana was 13 of 25 passing for 162 yards and one touchdown for the Golden Eagles, but was intercepted three times. Elam rushed for 59 yards on 18 carries, and Augustin had 54 yards receiving on three catches.
For Fairmont State, Hibbs threw for 240 yards on 27-of-35 passing, Charles gained 80 yards on the ground on 18 attempts, and Fabian Guerra caught nine passes for 82 yards.
Alderson Broaddus 19, Glenville State 7: The Battlers used solid defense in earning the road victory over the Pioneers at Morris Stadium in Glenville.
Alderson Broaddus only allowed one touchdown on a Dom Gibson 8-yard run for Glenville State with 9:59 left in the third quarter, but that was all the Pioneers could muster.
The Battlers led 6-0 at halftime on two second-quarter field goals and trailed 7-6 after the Glenville State touchdown, but scored the last 13 points of the game to improve to 5-2.
Brandon Jones gained 95 yards on 28 carries for Alderson Broaddus and Dakota Bruggerman threw for 215 yards and two touchdowns. Dante Roberts passed for 177 yards to lead Glenville State (3-4).
