West Virginia State was locked in a first-half shootout on the road against Notre Dame College Saturday afternoon in South Euclid, Ohio.
Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets, they fired nothing but blanks in the second half in a 48-21 Mountain East Conference loss.
The Falcons (5-1 overall, 4-1 MEC) outscored State (1-5, 1-5) 20-0 in the second half to pull away.
Notre Dame quarterback Malik Grove tossed for 227 and four touchdowns and DJ Greene added 140 rushing yards and another TD on the ground. CJ Germany hauled in two passes, both TDs, for 78 yards, while Marvelle Ross and BJ Baldwin each had a TD reception.
State was paced by quarterback Austin Hensley's 254 passing yards and two scores. Hensley also had a pair of interceptions. Dionta Brown managed 48 rushing yards and Juawan Etheredge had a TD run to lead the Yellow Jackets on the ground. Quinton Gray and Akil Washington pulled in TD passes for State.
Shepherd 38, Glenville State 7: The Rams improved to 5-0 overall and in conference play with the easy home win.
Shepherd led just 17-7 entering the fourth quarter before scoring 21 unanswered points.
Rams quarterback Jeff Ziemba burned the Pioneers' defense for 334 passing yards and three scores. Billy Brown pulled in two TD passes while recording 117 receiving yards, with Deonte Glover pulling in a first-quarter scoring pass. Glover also added 61 rushing yards and a score, while Brandon Hlavach added 59 yards and a 4-yard TD run.
For Glenville (3-3, 3-3), Dante Abshire scored on a 45-yard pass from Dante Roberts.
Fairmont State 31, West Virginia Wesleyan 17: The Falcons (6-0, 5-0) scored 14 uanswered points in the fourth quarter to escape Buckhannon with the win.
Terrell Charles, who led Fairmont with 92 rushing yards and two touchdowns, scored the go-ahead TD with 13:29 to play, while Jeff Iweh pulled in a 17-yard scoring pass from Cooper Hibbs with 1:32 to play. Hibbs tossed for 291 yards and two scores and was picked off once. Laurence King also had a TD reception and 81 recieving yards for the Falcons.
For Wesleyan (1-5, 1-5), Ryan Deal finished with 224 passing yards with a score and an interception, while Michael Anderson added 104 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Urbana 54, Cincinnati Christian 7: The Blue Knights (2-4, 1-4) rolled to a 34-7 halftime lead and cruised down the stretch for the easy home win. Cincinnati Christian dropped to 0-7.
Tajuan Green led Urbana with 234 passing yards and three touchdowns and 80 rushing yards with another score. Cale Burdyshaw tossed for 88 yards and two more scores, while Trey McFadden and Marcus Graham also had rushing TDs for Urbana.
Trevon Saunders pulled in eight passes for 232 and four touchdowns to pace Urbana.
