West Virginia State outlasted a lengthy weather delay and the Urbana Blue Knights to secure its first victory of the season, 37-24 over host Urbana Saturday.
Lightning delayed the game at around 3:30 p.m. with 18 seconds left in the third quarter and the Yellow Jackets holding a 34-17 lead. After a couple of false starts, the game didn't resume until nearly 7:30.
State led 14-10 at halftime and scored three touchdowns in the third quarter to pull away. Freshman Juawan Etheredge punched in a pair of short TD runs and Akili Washington hauled in a 32-yard scoring pass from former Hurricane standout Austin Hensley. Hensley completed 11 of 12 passes for 194 yards and one score in relief of starting quarterback Matt Kinnick, who connected on 10 of 13 attempts for 126 yards and a score.
Etheredge gained 132 yards on 29 carries and Quinton Gray caught nine passes for 128 yards for the Jackets (1-1 overall, 1-1 Mountain East).
Glenville State 31, W.Va. Wesleyan 28: Glenville State overcame an 11-point halftime deficit en route to a come-from-behind victory at West Virginia Wesleyan.
The Pioneers outscored the Bobcats 14-0 in the third quarter and Thomas Boles' 5-yard touchdown run with 3:56 left in the game gave the Pioneers the lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Dante Roberts was 33 for 45 passing for 296 yards and two touchdowns for Glenville State (2-0, 2-0) and Dom Gibson rushed for 94 yards on 18 carries. Michael Anderson led Wesleyan (0-2, 0-2) with 157 yards on 19 carries with one touchdown.
Fairmont State 28, Concord 0: The Falcons defense held the Mountain Lions to just 232 yards of total offense in earning the shutout victory at home.
Fairmont State (2-0, 2-0) intercepted Concord quarterback Brian Novak twice and sacked him twice. On offense, Falcons quarterback Cooper Hibbs and wide receiver Fabian Guerra hooked up for three touchdowns passes, with Hibbs finishing 25 for 31 and 297 yards while Guerra caught 11 passes for 175 yards. Novak was 21 for 45 for 168 yards for Concord (1-1, 1-1).
Notre Dame 35, Virginia-Wise 29: The Falcons led by 22 at halftime but had to hold on for the road win after a valiant second-half effort by the Cavaliers.
Wise outscored Notre Dame 15-3 in the third quarter and cut the deficit to 32-29 with 11:59 left in the game but could get no closer.
Malik Grove was 18 for 40 passing for 356 yards and four touchdowns for Notre Dame (2-0, 1-0), D.J. Greene rushed for 90 yards on 25 carries, and Mitchell Shegos caught seven passes for 162 yards and three touchdowns. Brycen Lee was 27 for 45 passing for 257 yards for Wise (1-1, 0-1).
McKendree 16, West Liberty 15 (2 OT): After scoring a touchdown in the second overtime to cut the deficit to one point, the Hilltoppers went for the win but their 2-point conversion attempt failed, giving McKendree the home win.
Tied at six after regulation, both teams traded field goals in the first overtime. McKendree (2-0) scored a touchdown on a 15-yard pass from Elcee Burke to Sean Dowling in the second overtime and the extra point made it 16-15.
Dakota Conwell scored on a 1-yard touchdown run for West Liberty (0-2). In the fourth quarter, West Liberty scored the game-tying touchdown with 6:17 left but missed the extra point.
