Senior seasons in college football often become the final chance for record-breaking achievements, that last go-around that can put a veteran at the top of the list.

University of Charleston wide receiver Joey Augustin need not worry about such a farewell tour. The senior already sits atop so many lists.

The Golden Eagles' single-season leader in receiving yards and touchdowns, as well as their career leader in receiving touchdowns, Augustin has plenty of personal milestones in his pocket.

As UC prepares for the 2016 season, his goals have moved to a more tangible milestone - for his hand.

"We want a ring," he said.

Augustin's sights are set on helping the team grow from Mountain East Conference contender to MEC champion, and that took some personal growth over the offseason to get rolling.

When the 6-foot-4 Christiansburg, Virginia, native sat down for his 2015 exit interview, coaches had a plan for him. He was superb on the field, catching 49 passes for 900 yards and 10 touchdowns. UC coaches were interested in his off-field development.

"They told me, 'You need to be more mature. You need to come into meetings, really be focused and knuckle down,' " Augustin said.

The senior got some of his inspiration from the HBO series "Hard Knocks." Augustin has NFL aspirations, and as he watched the chronicles of the Houston Texans' preseason camp, he saw the sacrifices those players needed to make in order to latch onto a pro roster. And if that's what it took, he said, there was no time like the present to start.

"I sacrificed a lot of the childish stuff," he said, "going out and things like that. I got into the film room, saw what was going on and the little things other teams were doing."

That time in the film room allowed Augustin to break down opponents' nuances. He saw which hand defensive backs would shoot out in coverage and which coverage schemes they enjoyed playing the most.

"It's so much easier," he said. "Watching all that film, it's so much easier to read a coverage and sit in a zone. It comes naturally, like muscle memory. You've seen it before. You know which hole to sit in."

UC head coach Pat Kirkland said that off-season film work has paid off and the areas where Augustin has improved have been obvious.

"Reading a defense," Kirkland said. "Knowing pre-snap where his eyes need to be and knowing, hey, this is how I'm going to adjust my route because this is what I'm going to see post-snap. He's become a much better student in the classroom."

Augustin enters the season with 102 career catches for 1,615 yards and 19 touchdowns.

UC had been a run-heavy team for so long, but his emergence has allowed the Golden Eagles to add more balance to their offense. Augustin hopes that balance leads to a better finish in 2016.

The Golden Eagles enjoyed an unprecedented 2015, earning their first NCAA Division II playoff berth.

Yet there still is room to grow for UC, and Augustin said that's the team's mission.

"Go further," he said. "Go further. Win it all. We've never had a ring in school history. That's really the goal. Go get a ring."
