West Liberty men's basketball player Seger Bonifant was named MEC male athlete of the year Wednesday for the second straight year. The award-winner is selected by a vote of institutional administrators and the conference office.
In leading the Hilltoppers to the NCAA Division II Final Four for the second time in three years, he was named MEC Player of the Year, D2CCA Atlantic Region Player of the Year, consensus first-team All-American and the Basketball Times Player of the Year - all for a second-consecutive season. He averaged 25.5 points and set a school record with 893 points in 2015-16. Bonifant was the NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament MVP after averaging 26 points while helping WLU to its fifth Atlantic Region championship.

WOMEN'S GOLF: Bridgeport's Caroline Ramsey followed up her opening-round 69 with a 72 to win the 43rd West Virginia Women's Senior Amateur championship by 15 strokes Wednesday at the Lewisburg Elks Country Club.
It was Ramsey's 14th State Women's Senior Am title. Mary Payne of Charleston took second place.

MARSHALL BASEBALL: Former Marshall infielder Aaron Bossi has signed a free-agent contract with the New York Yankees, he announced Tuesday on social media.
The four-year starter joins for Thundering Herd teammates who were selected in the Major League Baseball draft earlier this month - center fielder Corey Bird (Marlins), pitcher Burris Warner (Tigers), JD Hammer (Rockies) and pitcher Parker Danciu (Braves).
All have signed.

UC GOLF: University of Charleston's Will Johnson was named the Dave Williams Division II Atlantic Region Golf Coach of the Year for his efforts with the Golden Eagles this season.
Johnson is the men's and women's golf coach at UC. On the men's side, the Golden Eagles advanced to regionals and won the Mountain East Conference Fall and Spring Classics. Johnson was also named the 2016 MEC Coach of the Year on the women's side.

JUNIOR GOLF: Owen Elliott of Hedgesville shot a 1-over-par 72 to claim the United Bank Boys Low Round of the Day and win the boys 17-18 division title as the Callaway Junior Tour continued Wednesday at The Pines Country Club in Morgantown.
Charleston's Torren Kalaskey won the United Bank Girls Low Round of the Day, shooting 79 to win the girls 15-18 title.
Other winners were Charles Town's Christian Boyd (15-16 boys, 75), Hurricane's Sam White (13-14 boys, 79), Charleston's Bryson Beaver (12-and-under boys, 95), and Alexa Oates of Naples, Florida (10-14 girls, 82).
The Callaway Junior Tour continues Thursday at the Clarksburg Country Club.
