Big innings help Shepherd to baseball sweep of WVSU

The West Virginia State baseball team had its four-game winning streak snapped as the Yellowjackets dropped a doubleheader to Shepherd Thursday in Shepherdstown. State lost the first game 16-4 before falling 13-7 in the nightcap.

In the first game, the two teams were tied at 4 heading into the bottom of the fifth when the Rams pounded out 12 runs to pull away.

State's Eric Roberts took the loss, allowing five runs, four of them earned, on four hits while striking out five in four innings.

Trayvis Patterson went 1 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs, Dylan Grimm drove in a run and Brandon Wright and Josh Kiser each went 2 for 3 for the Yellow Jackets (8-8, 3-3 Mountain East Conference).

In the second game, Shepherd used another big inning to earn the victory, plating six runs in the bottom of the second.

State's Dustin Kincaid took the loss, allowing nine runs, four earned, on 11 hits in four innings.

Phil Mandt went 2 for 3 with a double, a home run and two RBIs and Kiser knocked in two runs for State.

The Yellow Jackets play a doubleheader at noon Saturday at Fairmont State.
