Roundup: West Liberty wins D2 hoops regional

West Liberty defeated Kutztown 85-64 Tuesday evening at Wheeling Jesuit University to claim the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Title, its fifth in the past six years.

With the victory, the Hilltoppers improve to 29-3 and advance to the Elite Eight next Wednesday in Frisco, TX.

Seger Bonifant scored 18 points for West Liberty, and became the school’s all time leading scorer, passing former Woodrow Wilson standout Shane Maynard.

Also for the Hilltoppers, David Dennis almost had a triple double with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists, Zach Grossenbacher scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Devin Hoehn added 18 points.

WVU baseball beats Radford, 6-2 

West Virginia University’s baseball team scored four runs in the third inning for a 6-2 home victory Tuesday over Radford.

Second baseman Shaun Corso drove in four runs for WVU (10-4) on a pair of hits, including a two run single in the decisive third inning. He added two more RBIs on a seventh-inning hit.

Designated hitter Marques Inman, catcher Ivan Vera, and shortstop Jimmy Galusky each had two hits for WVU. Pitcher Tanner Campbell earned the win, allowing one run in six innings.

12th-inning HR gives Marshall win 

Tommy Lane led off the bottom of the 12th inning with a solo home run to left-center field to give Marshall’s baseball team a 6-5 home victory over Morehead State.

Lane, a first baseman, collected three hits and drove in two runs for the Herd (9-6). Third baseman Tyler Ratliff had two hits for Marshall and right fielder Andrew Zban drove in two runs.

Morehead State (12-4) tied the game in the top of the ninth inning on a two-out, run scoring single by Reid Leonard. The two teams combined for 15 different pitchers with Marshall’s Wade Martin finally claiming the win with two innings of shutout relief.

Marshall softball sweeps doubleheader 

Marshall extended their winning streak to five games after sweeping a doubleheader over Toledo by scores of 5-3 and 8-3 at home.

In the first game, Kaelynn Greene collected two hits and Briana Daiss had two RBIs as the Herd (14-8) scored the first five runs of the game and held on. Taylor McCord provided the bulk of the offense for Marshall in the second game with two hits and four runs batted in and Elicia D’Orazio added three hits.

Groesbeck, Rusch named Tech performers of the week 

Junior Brady Groesbeck and freshman Rachel Rusch were named the WVU Tech Performers of the Week.

Groesbeck, a second baseman on the Golden Bear s baseball team, finished the week 7 for 9 at the plate, drove in four runs and scored five runs in a four-game sweep of Brescia University.

Rusch, a softball player, collected five hits and scored four runs in a doubleheader split against Bluefield College.
